Movie Review: Toy Story 3

By Tatta Matt

Unarguably the best among the three; Toy Story franchise returns with it’s final edition in a 3D avatar for one last time. Directed by Lee Unkrich and produced by Disney Pixar, Toy Story 3 - one of the most loved animated movie - runs for 1 hour 45 minutes, making it a short and sweet adventure tale of lifeless toys, that speak a mind of their own.

Andy the kid, who once had a huge collection of toys in his room, has now grown up into a hand-some teenager, soon he will join college and it is time for him to put his beloved toys away, though they are still in perfect shape. Woody the sheriff is hopeful that Andy will tuck them away safely in the attic so that when he has kids of his own, they’ll play with the toys someday, but Wood’s and his friends’ dreams are short-lived, for, Andy’s mother is of the opinion that the toys be discarded as nobody would play with them once Andy leaves home.

As Andy picks up Woody and Buzz Light Year, his heart skips a beat yet again for the two of his favorite toys and he wants to take them to college with him. So he puts the two in a box, which he would take away to college and others in a bag that his mom will donate to a nearby kid’s day care centre. His mom mistakenly picks up the other bag, thinking it is trash and throws it out of the house. Woody is now in a fix. He has to save his friends. Off he jumps the window, saves his friends form trash van and they all crash land in the box that is to be donated to Sunnyside Day care.

Sunnyside Day care is now altogether new and fascinating home for the toys and an unknown place where they are accorded a warm welcome by other toys. But their grief of being discarded by Andy still looms, until they meet Losto - the Pink Bear. Woods tries to convince his friends to return to Andy, but the toys have now taken a disliking for him and decided to stay back at the day care center, with different kids each day, playing with them all day long. The unruly kids of the day care get the better of Andy’s toys and it is now Lotso has trapped them. Someone’s arm is missing, while someone else’s nose goes for a toss! The toys are in an utter mess and now want to break free.

Then on begins their adventure journey through the day care center with loads of twists and turns. How they manage to save their life and whether Andy takes all of them to college is a must watch, the plot of the story flows smoothly throughout and does not give way to confusion. Even if you haven’t seen the earlier two installments; it doesn’t confuse you a bit. You get the gist of the story the moment it begins to roll on screen. Also the romantic angle of a heart broken Barbie and Ken is well picturized. All toys play their characters well on the screen and it goes for voice over artists behind the scenes.

All in all… Toy Story is a must watch for people of all ages. Go Watch it.

The Impact of Toy Story 3 on This Summer and Beyond!

By Charles CSC Taylor

In a time where video games can look more realistic than real life and CGI infiltrating live action movies more than ever, computer generated cartoon characters have become no big deal. Though CGI cartoons have become essentially the norm, even on TV shows, Toy Story, the movie that started it all, is doing its best to stay relevant. As usual with almost anything Disney and Pixar touch it seems to be succeeding. There has been tons of buzz over Toy Story 3, a 3-D installment to the already legendary series, and it’s sure to grow exponentially as we get closer to its June 18th release date.

The Toy Story series has always helped itself gain box office success by making the movies as enjoyable for adults as they are for kids and this next movie seems to follow that same trend. The story focuses on what happens when Andy, the owner of all these iconic toys, is getting ready to leave for college. This plot fits almost perfectly with the time line of the original target audience. It is an almost perfect fit for parents whose children were young when the first one was released in 1995 and will be going through the empty nest stage of their life soon if they haven’t already. This also fits inversely, because the young adults who were kids when Toy Story came out are now approximately college age and can also relate. Almost the entire cast of characters including Tim Allen and Tom Hanks are back, and stars like Michael Keaton (who from early rumors has struck comic gold as a short shorts wearing Ken doll) and Timothy Dalton have joined up, providing even more for adults to go see the movie.

The buzz doesn’t just stop with the newspapers and critics however. Like with most Disney movies, stores are starting to load up with Woody and Buzz Lightyear toys and costume stores have begun to stock up on Toy Story costumes from Buzz and Woody to characters as obscure as the army men. Considering its well timed summer release, this Halloween is bound to look like a coast to coast casting call for a live action Toy Story movie. I’ve even seen more than one sexy Bo Peep costume floating around for adults!

Toy Story 3 is almost guaranteed to be the most popular movie of the year, and Toy Story toys and costumes will be the some of the biggest trends of the year. Don’t say I didn’t warn you if you’re the only one who gets caught not headed to infinity and beyond!

Toy Story 3: Is This the Movie That All Merchandisers Have Been Waiting For?

By Mike P Dawson

So what have Pixar done this time that will please an ever growing audience of Toy Story movie fans and also the many, many companies who produce merchandise that fills our departments stores? Well there are a few new characters such as Rex, an endlessly worrying and insecure dinosaur or Twitch, an awesome half man half insect action figure. This will enhance the product ranges of many merchandising companies and enable more products to be generated by the increase in demand once the film is launched. Action toys are a good example of this as each comes individually packaged and allows for a collection to be built.

Will Toy Story 3 capture the imagination third time around? This is a definite yes, as already many product manufacturers remember the huge demand for Toy Story 1 and 2 merchandise. It helps that there are still the big name stars behind the new version, Tom Hanks as Sheriff Woody, Tim Allen as Buzz Lightyear and now Michael Keaton as Ken, not forgetting Whoopi Goldberg as Stretch. If that does not do it then perhaps the fact that the new film will be released in 3-D may get the audiences flocking to the cinema to see how many of the characters have adapted to this format.

Can Toy Story 3 top Avatar as the biggest grossing film of all time? Avatar managed to gross over $2.7bn in 2009 and with Titanic way behind on just over $1.8bn in number two position it will be interesting to see if Toy Story 3 is able to capture a bigger audience in 2010. Disney and Pixar have been slowly releasing more trailers and established promotions with companies such as Lego and Mattel as the launch draws nearer. Only recently Steve jobs of Apple showed a demo of Apple’s new iPhone OS 4 using an iAd for the new Toy Story 3 movie, which gives the new film a premium promoter. All this promotion is sure to get shoppers turning out in their thousands to get their hands on the latest toys, video games and many other forms of merchandise.

With the credit crunch not long behind us, it was surprising to see the popularity and expense paid out after the Avatar launch, it it just goes to show that even in times where money may be harder to find, we still manage to make sure our little ones have those latest toys and games that are brought about by new movies such as Toy Story 3.
