This year has been a slow year for movies so far. If you haven’t been going to the movies, don’t worry because you haven’t missed much. The best movie to come out this year in my opinion so far has been Kick Ass, which isn’t saying much. It was a very unique take on the superhero movie, but at the end of the day, it’s a superhero movie.
It’s a good thing the summer movie season is upon us now and we have some better flicks to look forward to.
The Adrien Brody science fiction thriller, Splice, came out last week and although it hasn’t done much at the box office, it has been getting great feedback from critics and moviegoers. I have not seen it but it is at the top of my short-term movie list.
It has been over 10 years since Toy Story 2 came out, and audiences are eager to see what will happen when Andy goes to college in Toy Story 3. I am very excited for this one for two reasons. First off, Pixar has yet to make a bad movie. Second, Toy Story spans generations and it seems like everyone wants to see it. Expect a big box office weekend when Toy Story 3 comes out.
My early pick for best picture of the year belongs to Inception. Directed by the great Christopher Nolan and starring an interesting combination of Leonardo DiCaprio and Ellen Page, Inception is one of the few big budget original screenplays being released this year.
While the trailers for Inception have been very much ambiguous until recently I do not think it will matter in the long run. I would trust Christopher Nolan with any script. It seems the more movies he does, the better he gets as well.
In a last attempt to save his career, M. Night Shymalan will be releasing The Last Airbender based on a children’s show of the same name on Nickelodeon. I have to admit, the visual effects in the trailers have looked pretty impressive and I won’t be ashamed to be lined up with the Nickelodeon generation to see this one.
On the indie side of things, I can’t wait to see the Jonah Hill comedy, Cyrus. It also stars John C. Reilly and the great Marissa Tomei and looks both creepy and hilarious. From some friends who saw it, I have heard that it is a heartfelt movie and appropriate to see on a date.

Movies That Will Be Worth Seeing This Year

As far as movies go, 2010 has been off to a slow start. It is officially summer movie season but you wouldn’t know it since the box office has been so lackluster the past few weeks. New entries like Prince of Persia and Ashton Kutcher’s killers, just don’t have the same allure as movies of comparable weekends in years past (Spiderman, Pirates, etc).
Fortunately, there are some movies coming out that you should look forward to.
Splice, a science fiction thriller starring Adrien Brody was released this weekend and although it has not received box office acclaim, it is getting rave reviews. I have only heard great things and plan on seeing it this week.
It’s been a while since we’ve seen Woody, Buzz and the rest of the gang. Finally, we get Toy Story 3 this summer. This is sure to do major business at the box office and since Pixar is behind it, you know it will be great.
Inception, a new film from the brilliant Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight, Memento, etc) is sure to be incredible. If you are somehow not a fan of his movies, maybe you will be drawn by the lead role, belonging to Leonardo Dicaprio.
Nolan has yet to make a bad movie in my opinion and an original screenplay from him about a psychological thriller has Oscar nominations written all over it.
I’m not sure why, but I really want to see M. Night Shymalan’s new film, The Last Airbender. The only films of M. Night’s that I enjoyed were the Sixth Sense and The Village, so if this one stinks, I’m done with him.
Finally, Tron 3D should be a visual masterpiece. The original was revolutionary at the time, and the trailers for the new one look like it setting the bar again. The special effects look insane.
In addition to writing about arts and entertainment, this writer also gives advice on finding a great portable dvd player for sale and dvd cases.

The Most Anticipated Movies of 2010

It may be 2010, but there really haven’t been any great movies yet this year. If you didn’t get a chance to see many movies in 2009, there are a few that are worth your while.
Since the Oscars expanded to 10 entries for best picture, it’s harder to sort the good from the bad. Here are some of my favorite films from 2009.
The Hurt Locker was an extraordinary movie. There really haven’t been any great Iraq War movies until this one. It tells the story of a bomb squad member in Iraq who plays by his own rules. It is a gripping and suspenseful thriller, and while I don’t think it should have won Best Picture, easily was one of my top 5 favorites of the year.
If you haven’t seen Avatar, you must be living under a rock. What an experience this movie is. James Cameron continues to push the boundaries of movies and showed u something we had never seen before with the world of Pandora.
People complained that the plot of Avatar was unoriginal, but that’s not the point of the movie. I was never bored for one second with this one.
The award for my favorite movie of 2009 goes to District 9.
I love everything about this movie. I love how this movie was directed by a relatively inexperienced director (Neil Blompkamp) with a first time actor in Sharlto Copley. This movie had a fraction of the budget of so many bad action flicks that come out of Hollywood, and it blows most of them away.
This was a movie I never wanted to end; It provides a realistic look into what an alien invasion could look like. District 9 was action packed, suspenseful, funny at times and heartbreaking at others. I never knew where this movie was going next and I cannot wait to see it again.
When not writing about film and media, this author enjoys writing about music products such as the USB guitar and accessories like guitar amp heads.

Comic book movie adaptations are getting a huge audience over the years with so many superheroes who already made it to the big screen.
Marvel Entertainment made it big with their crime fighting heroes line-up such as Spiderman, X Men, Incredible Hulk, Iron Man and the upcoming Thor, Captain America as well as the Avengers. Stan Lee must be proud of his children. After all, he created most of the famous Marvel superheroes.
Well, apparently, D.C Comics aren’t backing up as well. After creating a D.C Entertainment division, Warner Brothers Chairman and CEO, Barry Meyer had recently announced that the studio have lined-up several release dates for their upcoming 2011 movies which includes several D.C comic book superheroes to be brought to life on the big screen as well as some sequels from existing Batman and Superman franchise.
Most of you would be wondering which D.C superheroes will appear in theaters this time around and some may even had heard rumors of certain projects which are already on preproduction.
Well, Green Lantern will be expected to be released on 17th June 2011 starring Ryan Renolds as Hal Jordan. Reynolds who is not unfamiliar with superhero movies after his involvement in Blade 3 Trinity as the annoyingly sarcastic Hannibal King and as Deadpool in Wolverine.
In July 2012, Batman 3 will be back in theaters as well as the long awaited sequel Superman movie by the end of 2012.
Barry Meyer had also revealed that the Flash will be coming into the big screen as the project is nearing a greenlight. Other D.C superheroes such as Wonder Woman and Aquaman may also be making an appearance as they are under development.
Yes, superheroes are the ‘in-thing’ now and expect to be seeing more of them in the near future.
I wonder if Warner Brothers are planning to make a Justice League movie like how Marvel is on going with their Avengers project.
Nevertheless, I bet that like me, most of you comic lovers are super-excited about this news. Who wouldn’t? The only question now is, would these adaptations live up to the expectations of the fans and non-fans alike?

More Superhero Movies Coming Our Way

Live in the Moment to Alleviate Parent Guilt
Two of the characters are carrying parent guilt in the new Sex In the City 2 movie. Miranda (Cynthia Nixon), and Charlotte (Kristin Davis), represent the average parents today agonizing over their parental duties conflicting with work, and those parents trying to raise difficult children.
More women are working outside of the home now than ever and they are feeling split between the jobs they need, and missing their children’s plays, games, and growth moments.
Miranda is like many women who only feels fulfilled having a career, in addition to being a parent. This is what makes her happy and feeling that she is a whole and complete.
Charlotte finds relief from the stresses and pressures of mother-hood through her Nanny, but she also feels guilty.
Real Guilt and False Guilt
It’s important that if you are a parent to know the difference between real guilt and false guilt.
Real guilt is when you do something intentionally to hurt a child. False guilt is when you are doing your best, but may fall short like the average parent.
If you have done what you could to be a good parent, but find your child is upset with you over a mistake you made, or you wished you could have done better in a situation even though you tried your best, then that’s false guilt.
When you are engaged in false guilt, know this is the ego-mind which always keeps you in turmoil. It’s the nagging voice that haunts you with, “I should have,” and “I could have”.
False guilt is a waste of time. It’s also living in the past, or in the future, and not living in the moment.
For example, when you are thinking about your child’s award ceremony you missed. That’s the past. If you are feeling guilty about an upcoming event that you will miss, that’s living in the future. Either way, you are causing yourself unnecessary stress. You have enough parental pressures just trying to get through the day performing daily child-rearing duties while trying to provide for your child, so let false guilt go.
Live in the Moment
The best thing you can do for you and your child, is to live in the moment. Enjoy each moment fully that you have with your child. He or she will feel that they are important in your life, and that you value them.
Being present at events and games doesn’t mean you are emotionally involved. There are parents who work inside of the home, and attend every function, but their child still feels emotionally abandoned, perhaps because mom is constantly on the phone, texting, or simply constantly day-dreaming.
Deep listening giving all of your attention to your child, is one of the highest forms of love. Even if you don’t have hours to spend, the time you do have, make the best of it by tuning in to what your child is saying by listening with not only your ears, but with your heart.
Try not to multi-task while listening, even though as parents that seems the only way to get things done these days.Quality time is being in the moment with your child even in the short periods you do have.
Child-rearing days seem like forever when you are living them, but in reality, they are only a blip in time. Your child chases after you while they’re small wanting your full attention, but when they are in their teen years and beyond, you’ll find yourself chasing after them wanting their time too.
So drop false guilt. Live in the moment with your child. Remember the present is a gift, and it’s the greatest gift you can give your child and yourself.

Here are the top 10 movies to see this summer. The films chosen for this list were limited to English language films.
1. The Twilight Saga: Eclipse
Whether you love it or hate it, the Twilight Saga is wildly popular and is attracting more fans to the series everyday. Eclipse is the 3rd film in the series, after New Moon.
2. Toy Story 3
This is a perfect movie for the kids to go see — Toy Story continues the classic tale of toys coming to life, with feelings and a whole world of their own.
3. Predators
Predators is horror meets sci-fi at its finest — if you’re looking to really get your horror fix, you can’t go wrong with a team of human warriors being brought to an alien planet as prey. While it’s definitely not for the squeamish, this will absolutely become a must see film this summer for all horror fans.
4. Inception
Leonardo DiCaprio, Ellen Page, and Ken Watanabe all star in this sci-fi adventure film that probes deeper into a subject that still leaves us perplexed: the mind. The PG-13 rating will ensure that teenagers can round up their friends and still look cool at a “serious” film.
5. Prince of Persia: Sands of Time
Action and intrigue in the sandy desert await you in Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. It’s pure fantasy with plenty of action and adventure, and if you’re looking for high action fun, this is definitely a great pick for you.
6. Killers
Romantic comedy meets action in this sweet film about finding true love — and doing everything in the world to protect your soulmate. Katherine Heigl is the lead female star, and her successful romantic comedy portfolio is growing by the year — this one should be a success too.
7. Knight and Day
Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz team up for a wild action-suspense film that has a touch of comedy. If you’re looking to get your action fix without getting into a serious drama, this is the movie you want to see this summer.
8. Avatar: The Last Airbender
Teenagers will like this action film for some of its themes — like a teenager being the last of his kind that has the power to save his homeland.
9. Dinner for Schmucks
This is another comedy film, but that’s okay — the more chances you have to laugh this summer, the better you’ll feel! Steve Carell definitely comes bringing the laughs, and Paul Rudd isn’t half bad either.
10. Sex and the City 2
Even if you’re not into this classic example of the “chick flick”, Sex and the City 2 will definitely open to plenty of excitement from hardcore fans. There are already parties set up to go see the movie, and if you liked the first film the second one should be perfect.
The movies are listed in order from 1 to 10, but that doesn’t mean that you have to follow that pattern to get started! The key is just to dive headfirst into the top 10 movies that you absolutely must see this summer — don’t forget the popcorn!

Top 10 Movies to See This Summer

Avatar, the top ranked film of all time, has officially hit everyone as emotionally as possible. Its stunning new technology mixed with digital 3D made its depiction of Pandora nearly real. Many people felt completely different walking out of this film, some for the good and some for the worse.
The result of this cutting edge technology is a film that looks so real, one could almost believe it existed. One could dream about it, and perhaps exist to be there one day. Yeah that whole dreaming of Pandora thing seems cool, but I wasn’t turned into an emotional wreck. Apparently this is not the case for the majority of viewers.
After viewing Avatar, a severely large percentage of viewers reported depression. So many, that it has become a widespread topic all over movie forums and Avatar forums. Many people write about their symptoms of depression and how to cope with them. Some even mention suicide. This is extremely scary. This movie goes so deep emotionally that it has people begging for a chance to live on Pandora.
The reason people crave Pandora is because they want a Na’vi- like life. They want a simple life in a close nit tribe on a beautiful planet and a love story to top it off. The reality of things is, the way these Na’vi live truly is a better way of life than our own. It shows that people, despite showing so much consumer insanity, just may be ok with a social system that does not involve high definition TVs. This is actually a good sign in terms of human nature. Some thought if there was ever a drastic event that caused a massive adaptation to a new life style; people would not be able to handle it. An example of this is Peak Oil, or China ruling the world. What people need to understand is earth one ups Pandora in all categories.
Pandora may be a beautiful place, but in my opinion earth is much more interesting. People seem to forget about just how amazing nature is. They sit in their apartment, work 9-5, and see nothing but a concrete jungle. This is not the way you should be living your life. Many people here on earth live the same way as the Na’vi and love it. You should consider alternatives to your consumer driven life style.
We may not have floating mountains, but earth is extremely beautiful and people need to change their life style if they want to live like the Na’vi. No, this does not mean simply buying the movie and watching it over and over again on your HD TV.

I like summer blockbusters as much as the next person, and while not the best movies that Hollywood has to offer, the summer movie schedule is important to studios and moviegoers alike. There’s a tried and true method when it comes to summer blockbusters, and it goes something like this: whatever worked in the past is bound to work again. This is why the summer of 2010 is going to look quite similar to the summer of 2008.
Every once in a while the Hollywood “machine” puts out a truly spectacular, truly excellent film that will stand the test of time. Alien, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, Rocky, and The French Connection to name just a few. Most of the time, however, Hollywood churns out tried and true “formula” movies. Boy meets girl, boy falls for girl, girl leaves boy, girl comes back to boy in the end. You know what I’m talking about. One of the reasons Hollywood sticks to a formula is because they can predict, with crazy accuracy, how a certain film will do based on the performance of others similarly structured. That’s why every summer we know we’ll see lots of big action films with mega-stars known around the globe. Big action movies work in the summer, and 2010 will have no shortage of action, even if we’ve seen it all before.
Iron Man 2 looks to make another gazillion dollars as fans are hotly anticipating its release in late May. Iron Man 2 won’t be the only sequel this summer. The hugely successful Shrek franchise releases Shrek Forever After, and Sex and the City 2 will also try to capitalize on the success of its older sister. We’ll also see Woody and the rest of the gang in Toy Story 3. Remakes are hugely popular in Hollywood, and the summer seasons are never immune from them. The biggest so far comes to us in the form of Robin Hood with Russell Crowe, which promises to be a tale of the Prince of Thieves like we’ve never seen before. We’ll also see remakes of some great modern Hollywood classics like The Karate Kid, and Footloose. We’ll also get to see The A-Team, which was a wildly successful television show that was destined for the big screen.
In the meantime, catching up on the originals or first installments of these great movies is easy when you have premium programming from Cox Cable TV. Whether you catch them on premium movie channels like HBO, Showtime, Starz, or prefer them on your own schedule on Pay-Per-View or Video On Demand, you know you’re getting unedited, first run films shown the way the studios intended them to be seen!
Have fun this summer at the movies!
